Business Need

Retail Inkjet’s goal was to create an easy to use kiosk for refilling printer cartridges. Because the machine would be used by retail employees with little to no training, the touch screen interface had to be immediately intuitive for beginners without impeding the more advanced users.

Strategy & Solution

In order to allow both novice and advanced users to quickly refill cartridges, we:

• Oriented the screen design around an image of the machine so that users could understand which part of the machine was referred to in each step of the instructions
• Created both a step-by-step guidance mode for beginning users and a more advanced mode
• Designed a display that showed in visual detail all the information about filling status
• Developed a clear and consistent visual language for warnings and alerts to help users resolve problems with minimal customer support
