Business Need

In 2003, Through the Lens created the first workflow software designed to help professional photographers manage photos and clients throughout the lifecycle of each client engagement. The software allowed users to do everything from importing and organizing photos to placing orders and creating albums for clients. Through the Lens hired Sliced Bread Design to create a workflow that would allow photographers to manage their businesses intuitively and efficiently.

Strategy & Solution

In order to design the new Through the Lens product, we:

  • Reviewed rough PowerPoint mock-ups to understand the initial design direction
  • Designed a flexible workflow that allows users to navigate through a set of steps in a suggested order or to create their own order, depending on their needs
  • Created an intuitive screen layout that focuses on current photos while providing options relevant to the current tasks and easy navigation to discarded photos
  • Designed processes for all client communication, including organizing client notes and info, selecting proofs, creating slideshows, setting up a website, and ordering prints
  • Designed one of the first complete online processes for laying out albums and frames that would tie in with a album/frame vendor site – process is similar to designs now in use by book creation sites like iPhoto books
  • Informally user tested designs with technology averse professional photographers who were unfamiliar with digital photos - met with rave reviews!
