What we designed

  • New website that steers small businesses through the confusing process of shopping for health insurance
  • Easy-to-use recommendations tool to help people decide between insurance providers and products
  • Visual analysis of health insurance benefits offered by similar employers to help small businesses see how they compare and remain competitive
  • Flow that simplifies plan offerings and makes the shopping process easier

Results

  • Through A/B testing, we increased conversion rates by three-fold.
  • People took time to really explore the content on the site. Site analytics shortly after launch reported that users spent an average of 5.5 minutes on the site and viewed an average of 4.6 out of 5 pages per visit.

Connecting food lovers everywhere Read more Read less

Our insights

  • Users care a lot about what their friends are cooking – and there’s a lot of opportunity to harness informal recipe-sharing.
  • The primary reason people scan user comments on recipes is to search for ingredient substitutions or recipe improvements (for example, “this was way better with extra chicken broth”).

What we designed

  • Social networking site for food lovers – people can share their meals, get personalized recipe recommendations, and get suggestions for restaurants to visit
  • Innovative recipe view that foregrounds what people really want to know (for example, recommended ingredient substitutions)
  • Classic, sophisticated visual design that treats the food as the centerpiece
  • Progressive-disclosure approach to detail: hovers and drilldowns reveal information as it’s needed

Our insights

  • People care about the funniest, craziest, cutest, or wildest highlights of their footage – but it’s a nuisance to dig them up later. That’s why we made it simple to mark, share, and edit the most recent 30 seconds of video in the field.

What we designed

  • Mobile and desktop apps to manage Looxcie’s wearable camcorder
  • User interface focused on instantaneous use and seamless social media sharing
  • Consistent brand experience between hardware and software and across platforms – achieved in collaboration with Looxcie’s industrial design team

Results

  • In September 2010, Looxcie LX1 hit the shelves.
  • Reviewers loved the mobile app. Chris Burns of Slashgear called the app “exceedingly simple and basically impossible to not understand. You'll be recording, viewing, and even editing in no time!” (full review)

  • Tablet-optimized layout so agents can use the tool while visiting farmers in the field – literally!

Corel

Seamlessly sharing and storing photos Read more Read less

Our insights

  • People tend to share photos with the same people, or the same groups, again and again (for example, their parents, or their group of college roommates).
  • At the time we worked with Looxcie, photo sharing apps emphasized public sharing, even though many people were more interested in sharing with certain people they cared about.

What we designed

  • One of the first apps focused on quickly sharing photos with close family and friends
  • Tight Facebook photo album integration for automatic backups and easy browsing

Results

  • With our help, Corel was able to bring their first product, Slingshot, to the iPhone App Store in July 2011, despite an aggressive development schedule.
  • App reviews after launch gave design and usability high marks. One reviewer on BrightHub wrote that "the interface is the best part of Corel Slingshot.

  • Engaging content that translates complex financial concepts into material mere mortals can understand
  • Clear visuals to help people compare scenarios and make decisions
  • Series of step-by-step processes that guide users from discovery to action

Results

  • 10,000 people used Jemstep in the first two months after launch. By spring 2013, $1 billion worth of assets had been tracked and managed on Jemstep.
  • The press raved about the product – and, in particular, the UI. Jennifer Openshaw of the Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch wrote, "Jemstep made a huge leap by leveraging data to deliver a simple, easy-to-use investment-recommendation engine for retirement planning that’s personal, objective and accessible to those who can’t afford a traditional adviser." What we designed

  • Integrated experience for electric vehicle (EV) drivers and charging station owners, designed for both web and charging station screens
  • Comprehensive, enterprise-level system for station owners to set up and manage their network of stations
  • Actionable dashboards and reporting to help station owners prioritize their tasks and make better decisions
  • Driver website to help consumers track their energy usage
  • Entertaining storyline (complete with an animated cowboy!) at the charging station to lighten the mood as people charge their cars

Results

  • The new CT4000 animated charging station launched to the public in July 2013.

The special thing about working with Sliced Bread was the range of talent they assembled to support ChargePoint's product development. Our insights

  • Operations engineers are constantly deluged by alerts, making prioritization a constant challenge.
  • Software developers get frustrated when they have to ask others for access to log files – something they frequently have to do so that they can locate buggy code.

Our insights

  • When we interviewed families, we found that people don’t care about the general problems with their network – they care whether or not their current device is working.
  • Because the real explanation is intimidatingly technical, people come up with all kinds of justifications for why their network is broken (interference from the TV, changes in seasons, overgrown bamboo).

What we designed

  • Friendly approach to home network diagnostics that helps people answer the question “what’s the problem with the device I’m currently using, and how can I fix it?”
  • A mobile-first, fully cross-platform product, driven by different use cases for phone, tablet, and desktop
